So you're fired up about a topic, and you want to give a class on it. Fantastic! We welcome classes by members and non-members. Herein find recorded some notes on "Best Practices" for executing a class with a minimum of fuss. These tend to reflect errors and bumps already encountered by those who have gone before.

Before you announce the class[edit]

  • Poll for interest.
  • Pick a date and time. Scheduling isn't too complex yet. If we have a calendar in place, consult it.
  • If you're not a member, then identify someone who is willing to be the Responsible Member. Maybe that's someone taking the class, or someone just willing to be there to open the space.
  • Select a class size
    • We've actually condcted classes of 9 people, and think that 16 people working at laptops could be done with current downtown-space furniture
    • No classes conducted yet at the shop.

  • Bill of materials
    • Figure out what parts each student will need, and price them.
    • Decide if you can handle students Bringing Their Own. Flexibility may decrease the class price, but may also make the individual students' work less comparable. if everyone's working on the same kit, it's easier for folks to help each other.
    • Figure out the lead time to acquire. It's not necessary to have stuff in hand before you say go, but it can be nervous making to have things not yet arrived at the last minute. Allen Rout (talk) 05:06, 23 February 2014 (UTC)
    • If you want the space to front the cash for the materials, make a request to the board, it will be considered.

The announcement and signup document should include[edit]

  1. date _and_ time
  2. Number of places available
  3. location, possibly by reference to a link to one of our physical locations
  4. What equipment is necessary
  5. What equipment is available to be acquired
  6. How payment is to be conducted

Between announcement and class[edit]

Before the class[edit]

  • Make a point of doing some tidying up. This will also help you get a sense of the state of the space, so you can put it back that way when you're done.

During the class[edit]

After the class =[edit]

  • Clean up. :P
