In woodworking, you might buy a new circular saw with a blade, and use that one blade for years, for the lifetime of the saw. This is not true in metalworking. In metalworking, consumable items wear out fast enough that your wallet notices it. Cutting oil gets used up, saw blades will only cut so many feet before they must be replaced. Tips of MIG welders and plasma cutters wear out. End mills get dull, often in tens of minutes, fast enough you can watch the change. You can easily use up $10/hour of consumables just puttering around. The lifetime of consumables is highly dependent on how hard they are pushed, which is a matter of individual style and personality. You should individually buy and manage your own personal consumables.
